Distinguished and Famous people from Cowra

📷 Olive Cotton

Photographer Olive Cotton opened a studio in Cowra in 1964, making portraits and recording weddings and family occasions. She had already produced acclaimed photographs during her earlier Sydney career, including Teacup Ballet. After moving to the district in 1946, she lived near Koorawatha and later resumed professional photography through the Cowra studio. The combination gives her local legacy unusual breadth: nationally recognised art alongside photographs treasured in family albums. Cowra Regional Art Gallery’s collection helps preserve this part of her working life.

📚 Bob Brissenden

Bob Brissenden attended Cowra High School before university studies and a career in literary scholarship and writing. He became part of Canberra’s circle of poets, mentored younger writers and helped establish annual poets’ lunches at ANU. His interests extended from eighteenth-century literature to Australian writing, censorship and satirical songs. Retirement brought a further change of pace with thrillers featuring investigative journalist Tom Caxton. Scholarship and sociability shared the same career: a learned critic could also write a song or a page-turner.

🌾 Allan Callaghan

Allan Callaghan worked as an assistant plant breeder at the New South Wales Agriculture Department’s Cowra research station after postgraduate studies in Britain. At Roseworthy, students knew him as The Doc. He revised teaching, relaxed oppressive student rules and strengthened the scientific basis of farm management, with initiatives in dairying, plant breeding and wine studies. Later he directed South Australian agriculture and chaired the Australian Wheat Board, using scientific knowledge and diplomatic skills to develop markets. His working life linked experiments in crops with the institutions and relationships needed to put agricultural knowledge into practice.
